The Pacific Northwest has ruined us. We're now terrible about (among other things) climate, hiking gear, farmers markets, and beer - the latter being most pertinent to this post. Once we arrived in Medellin, we started a (half-hearted) quest to find and try the local beer. After trying the local beer, we began a new (half-hearted) quest to find and try good beer. Last night, our quest was, at least temporarily, successful.
We say temporarily because we did actually find good beer! The success was only fleeting however, as we payed for the beer with our most expensive evening out to date - both in terms of money and health. We arrived after a fantastic day out with our friend Hacène, early for a reunion with a couple of guys from Matt's class, but we were eager to check the place out.
Bogota Beer Company is a trip. In a city where drinking on the street is legal and plastic chairs in front of convenient stores is the preferred "bar," a pub definitely stands out. The waiters all spoke English, the music was a mix of 80's and 90's pop hits, the decor was dark wood and leather.
After arriving, we quickly tried a sampler of their beers before deciding to get what seemed like a reasonable amount of IPA based on our poor understanding of the metric system. Surprise! It was a pitcher to split between two people. Luckily we had about 3 hours to finish it. And, because we're champions (more on this later) we even ordered another beer apiece after our other friends showed up.
We left around nine, having had less than three beers each, over the course hours. We arrived home sleepy but proud of ourselves for completing our quest. This is when the success began to turn sour. The price had been way more than we anticipated - we were charged for waters (!) which we had many of, and ominously our stomachs were starting to feel a bit funny. True to form, Matt fell asleep almost immediately, but claimed to have felt pretty bad. Leah, after hours of agony, puked. Champions.
Alls well that ends well though, and our (i.e. Leah's) uncomfortable night was good motivate to treat ourselves to some bacon and eggs this morning, purchased at one of the many neighborhood butchers.
